Charka takes its name from the spinning wheel, and that is still the whole idea: cloth made slowly, by people we know, in the district it comes from.
We work from 46 Mujib Sarak in Jashore. Our muslin and cotton are woven on pit looms by weaving families we have bought from for years. Our silk is dyed by hand in small batches. And every nakshi motif — on a saree pallu, a panjabi placket or a full kantha quilt — is drawn freehand in chalk and then embroidered stitch by stitch.
What we make
Muslin, motka and Balaka silk sarees. Cotton panjabis with applique and nakshi stitch, in sizes 40 to 46. Kurtis and unstitched one-piece lengths. Frocks and little panjabis for children. Nakshi kantha bed covers and quilts. Terracotta showpieces and handmade brass jewellery.
Why handloom costs what it costs
A fine muslin saree takes a weaver most of a week. A full nakshi kantha takes one woman two to three months. We pay by the piece and by the hour, and we do not sell machine embroidery as handwork. Handloom cloth carries small irregularities in the weave — that is not a flaw, it is the proof.
